Perspectives: Sam’s Perspective – Silly Season
I’m Sam Jones.
The silly season is in full swing. All kinds of accusations and all kinds of promises. But when you get right down to it, there is very little in the way of substance. It’s almost as though all involved are what the Donald calls them,… contestants instead of candidates.
So in keeping with history, I have a silly little lesson for you today. One of the so-called issues raised by the Donald is,… can Ted Cruse be President, since he was born in Canada? I’ll leave the experts to answer that question. Here is a question for you,… How many of our Presidents were born British subjects? You have 10 seconds to answer. Times up. The answer is 9. That’s right 9 of our Presidents were born British subjects. They were George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren and William Henry Harrison.
This is how it happened,… The United States declared its independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain on July 4th., 1776. 9 of the first Presidents were born before the United States was formed. They were born in British America, the area that would later make up parts of the United States. Therefore, these men were technically British subjects at birth. At the end of the American Revolution, there was even a suggestion that General George Washington should be crowned King of America. Of course he rejected that idea.
There are other silly things about this election season but we are limited by time. I can however promise you one thing, if you thought congress has been do nothing for the past several years,… just wait. And here’s something else you can expect: I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the two party system is going to evolve publicly. Yes sir, the future of this country is going to be anything but dull as more and more members of congress allow their true colors to come shining through.
