Perspectives: Sam’s Perspective – Fit to Print
Anytime I travel I make it a point to go through the local newspaper. Gives me an idea of what’s important to folks in that part of the country.
Newspapers have been going through a tough time of it lately. Anymore, people can find the news of the day just about anywhere and that has put a serious dent in subscriptions. I truly enjoy the smaller town papers where you generally find events that don’t make it to print in the larger towns. Such things as, whose dog just gave birth to a litter of puppies or whose cotton crop got picked first and of course who has out of town relatives visiting.
The smaller town newspapers sometimes carry a column called, “The Police Blotter”, which gives a rundown of complaint calls to the Police department and sometimes, the disposition of those calls. Which brings me to the reason for today’s edition of “Sam’s Perspective”. I need your help. Let me explain,…
Recently I spent some time in a small town out of state. As soon as I settled in my hotel room, I got my hands on a local paper and sure enough, there was the Police Blotter. Two items had me laughing right away. The first,… a caller said a man had just hit him in the face, after he told the man’s dog to shut up. The second caller said his home had been burglarized, by two women. He said before they left, they painted two of his doors white. You can draw whatever conclusions you want from that last one but I have to tell you, I was sitting there alone, with a cup of coffee laughing out loud. It occurred to me that we need a little laughter this day and age. So I’ve decided to look into small town newspapers in this part of the country and I’m asking your help. As you scan your local paper check the Police Blotter, if it has one. If so, please,… send it to me here at Rogers State University.
If the response is strong enough, perhaps we can start a new segment of Perspectives, the Police Blotter. Also, include the name of your town, the name of your newspaper and please let me know if its o.k. to use your name on the air. I have a feeling we’ll find a great deal to lift our spirits in your town’s newspaper. And with all that’s going on in the world right now, we need it.
And that’s my Perspective.
