Oklahoma Heroes: Don Summers
Don Summers served aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Bairoko during the Korean War. He was also on board the ship during the Operation Castle hydrogen bomb testing at Bikini Atoll in 1954 and experienced fallout from those tests that continue to affect his health to this day. Don is currently active with DAV chapter 43 in Pryor as well as Chapter 44 in Claremore. In 2016 he was part of a group from chapter 43 that was featured in the national DAV magazine for their work in locating and marking the graves of service members whose official markers had gone unclaimed for years at a local funeral home.
