Oklahoma Heroes: Peter Luitwieler

Peter Luitwieler served in Military Intelligence in the Vietnam war. His biggest challenge during his deployment came during the Tet Offensive in January of 1968. His compound was surrounded by north Vietnamese troops and the two South Vietnamese machine gunners abandoned their position under incoming fire. Peter and a Marine Lieutenant ran up the steps and manned the machine gun for hours, keeping the advancing North Vietnamese at bay. He was decorated with the Vietnamese equivalent of the bronze star. Peter credits his time in the service with developing his maturity and helping him advance quickly in his career. After he retired, Peter began to learn about the needs of veterans in the community and began to dedicate his time to helping his fellow veterans. Peter currently works as a community coordinator at the Community Service Council, helping veterans and the organizations that serve them through Warrior Partnerships of Eastern Oklahoma.
