Oklahoma Heroes: Steve Lehto
Steve Lehto served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam era on the George C. Marshall, a nuclear submarine. The mission of the submarine was primarily defensive, although had a nuclear war broken out, the submarine would have been called on to retaliate. Steve credits his time in the Navy with teaching him valuable leadership skills that helped him throughout his career in the grocery industry. He began as a bagboy in 1967 and worked his way up to being a Chief Operating Officer by the end of his career. In 2015 Steve “answered the call” to help his fellow veterans, by joining the team at the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma, where he serves as the Rural Hunger and Veterans Outreach Manager. He coordinates numerous outreaches to food insecure veterans including a mobile eatery, mobile food pantries and food drives to benefit veterans.
