Oklahoma Heroes: Johnny Messimore

Johnny Messimore is a Vietnam veteran and a Cherokee Nation citizen who served with the 25th Infantry Division. He was part of a mechanized unit that operated out of tracked vehicles in the far reaches of the country for weeks or months at a time. Upon returning home, Johnny did not talk about his service, he focused on supporting his family and raising his children. Many years later, Johnny reconnected with other Vietnam veterans and came to terms with what he had experienced. He now volunteers his time with the Rogers Country Disabled American Veterans Chapter 44, as well as the Rogers County VFW. He helps lead fundraising efforts and serves as a local representative for the service organizations. Johnny is also a member of the Rogers County Planning Commission. He enjoys serving his community and seeing other get helped from the organizations he is involved with.
